Which car is allowed to convert to electric car and which is not: Avoid penalty

Auto News: If your budget is getting affected due to the rising price of petrol or diesel and you do not have the budget to buy a new electric car, then you can convert your old petrol or diesel car into an electric car. Just keep in mind that according to Indian law, do not convert a car into electric which is not permitted. You may have to pay a heavy fine for no reason. Converting petrol and diesel cars into electric ones is completely legal in India. For this, you have to get an electric motor vehicle retro-kit fitted in your old car. Its cost is also not very high. Let us know which cars can be converted and which cannot.

Diesel car rules

  • If you have a diesel car, then only if it is more than 10 years old but less than 15 years old, then an electric retro-fit kit can be installed in it.
  • If your diesel car is more than 15 years old, then you cannot convert it into electric.
  • If your diesel car is less than 10 years old, then you can convert it into electric.
  • Rules related to petrol vehicles
  • 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers running on petrol or CNG can be converted to electric.
  • Petrol or CNG cars older than 15 years can also be converted into electric ones. But there is a condition for this that a fitness certificate of the vehicle will have to be obtained. The vehicle will also have to be re-registered.
  • Petrol and CNG vehicles less than 15 years old are allowed to be converted into electric.
  • Will not have to pay fine

Electric Vehicle Conversion Rules and Costs

Vehicles that have been used for commercial activities, such as loading vehicles, auto rickshaws, etc., cannot be converted to electric vehicles if they are more than 15 years old. If you do not convert the right car to electric, you may have to pay a hefty fine. There are two types of retro fit kits available to convert a petrol car into electric. One is based on AC conversion and the other on DC conversion. If you install an AC conversion kit in your car, then it will cost you Rs 4 to 10 lakh. If you convert your car into electric with a DC conversion kit, then their cost ranges from Rs 2 to 5 lakh.
